A transformative gathering of minds and experiences at the University of Deusto, Bilbao (Spain) from July 8 to 11, 2024.

The VOICES Summer Training 2024 at the University of Deusto in Bilbao proved to be a remarkable event, bringing together a diverse international group dedicated to fostering inclusive mentoring for early career women in academia and research. This event, led by María López Belloso along with Marta Warat and Ola Thomson, and chaired by the VOICES Action Chair Anne-Sophie Godfroy, laid the groundwork for a collaborative and enriching exchange of ideas and best practices.

The training commenced with an inspiring keynote by Irene García Muñoz, who set the tone for the event by emphasizing the fundamental principles of mentoring and the power of our network. Throughout the days, esteemed speakers such as Liudvika Leišytė, May Morris, Nataliya Rohr, Stacy Johnson, and Xavier Eekhout Chicharro shared their insights on the significance of mentorship in higher education. Their diverse perspectives provided a comprehensive understanding of mentoring practices across Europe and beyond, fostering a richer dialogue and inspiring innovative approaches to mentoring.

In addition to the thought-provoking keynotes, the event featured interactive workshops and roundtable discussions led by facilitators including Alice Matimba, Guillopé Colette, Ekaterina Masetkina, and others. These sessions offered participants hands-on experiences and facilitated meaningful conversations on mentorship and sponsorship. The vibrant discussions, coupled with creative activities and a feminist guided tour of Bilbao, allowed for both professional growth and cultural immersion, making the event not only informative but also deeply engaging.

Special thanks to the local organizers, including María Silvestre, Mirelur G. González, Ainhoa Arostegui Orbegozo, and Anju Anna John, whose dedication and hard work ensured the event’s success. Their efforts have set a strong foundation for future collaborations and initiatives. The contributions of every participant, including the visual thinker Jorge Martín, who beautifully illustrated the principles of mentoring, have enriched the VOICES network. As we move forward, let’s continue to support and inspire one another in our shared journey toward inclusive and effective mentorship.
