On the 15th and 16th of May 2025, the VOICES COST Action’s Working Group 2 (WG2) convened a pivotal two-day workshop in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, focusing on the role of Early Career Researchers (ECRs) in university decision-making and leadership. The event brought together members of the WG2 to discuss on their research publications and their output towards the final outputs of the VOICES COST Action.

Day 1: Understanding the Role of ECRs in University Decision-Making

The workshop commenced with opening remarks outlining the objectives, expected outcomes, and an overview of the schedule. Participants introduced themselves, setting a collaborative tone for the sessions ahead.

Prof. Anne-Sophie Godfroy, Chair of the COST Action, delivered a welcome speech, emphasizing the importance of ECR involvement in shaping the future of higher education.A keynote lecture by Prof. Liudvika Leišytė delved into the complexities of ECR participation in institutional decision-making processes, highlighting both challenges and opportunities.

A panel discussion featuring Panourgias Papaioannou and Dovilė Daunoraite addressed barriers to ECR involvement, institutional structures, and strategies for increasing influence within university governance.

Dr. Mine Mukaddes Afacan Findikli presented a qualitative meta-synthesis of women leaders’ mentoring experiences in higher education, providing insights into effective mentorship practices.Participants then engaged in a group activity titled “Plovdiv: In the Footsteps of the Leaders,” a walking tour exploring the city’s history through the lens of influential female figures.The day concluded with a reflection session, summarizing key takeaways and setting goals for the following day.

Day 2: Empowering ECRs to Shape the Future of Universities

The second day began with a keynote lecture from Prof. Victoria Showunmi on the emergence and expectations of leaders, focusing on deconstructing traditional leadership and identity.Subsequently, Vika Lisnic and Maria Diacon discussed women’s participation in politics and leadership positions, using the Republic of Moldova as a case study.

Participants engaged in a discussion on key inputs for WG2’s involvement in the forthcoming White Book, aiming to consolidate insights and recommendations.The afternoon included a visit to the Simulation Center of the Medical University Plovdiv, offering a practical perspective on innovative educational tools.A session on reflections and future directions allowed participants to share insights and discuss implementing changes in their institutions.
