The Intersectionality, Research, and Action International Summer School (IRAISS)

The IRAISS is designed as a focused and innovative opportunity to engage novice and experienced scholars and activists in critical discourse, research, and epistemologies on intersectional research, theory, and practice. The IRAISS will host leading international scholars on intersectionality research.
The IRAISS will be held on the 12-15 of July 2022 in the beautiful southern city of Krakow, Poland. Krakow is the second largest and one of the oldest cities in Poland. Situated on the Vistula River in Lesser Poland Voivodeship, the city dates to the seventh löcentury. Kraków has traditionally been one of the leading centers of Polish academic, economic, intellectual, cultural, and artistic life. Krakow’s Old Town that features Wawel Royal Castle was declared one of the most beautiful cities and the first UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also the home of the oldest university in Poland.

The IRAISS will be housed at the Jagiellonian University [Uniwersytet Jagielloński (UJ)]. Founded in 1364, UJ is the oldest and most prestigious university in Poland. The campus is located in the center of Krakow and has a population of 35,000 students studying in 166 fields.

The IRAISS is monitoring the humanitarian situation in Poland and is prepared to relocate if the need arises.

Picture: Intersectional identities are multifaceted and comprehensively couched in historical, genetics, contemporary, social, and cultural phenomena. Intersectional identities are fluid and impacted by lived experiences.

Programme

This dynamic institute is purposed to explore and build knowledge on intersectional research, theory, and practice. The IRAISS seeks to convene interested scholars, activists, and other professionals who seek to grapple with questions and issues of intersectional identity. Particularly, the IRAISS is purposed to engage in solution-oriented discourse that focus on social justice issues and intersectionality in countries throughout Europe and its colonial legacy.
The IRAISS especially encourages early career professionals to include community activists, faculty, and researchers to submit a proposal. In addition, we welcome mid level and experienced professionals to submit a proposal.

All participants must be affiliated with an institution, an academic association, or a community organization in a European country. The proposal must consist of the following information:

1. Academic/Organization Affiliation
   Include: Name & address of Institution, Role and Title, Department, and Supervisor/Line Manager
2. Statement of Interest (250 words max)
   The Statement of Interest must include:
   1. How the IRAISS will support and enhance your knowledge?
   2. How the IRAISS will provide direct results/action in your field?
   3. How the three (3) major outcomes of the IRAISS align with your professional goals.
3. Research Agenda (150 words max)
   The Research Agenda must include:
   1. How the IRAISS align with your research agenda?
   2. What you intend to learn about intersectional research?

Picture: Intersectionality includes both cultural and social identities that impact epistemological, methodological, and ontological realities.

A scholarship to cover expenses will be awarded to all accepted proposals. Expenses include transportation, housing (at UJ), meals, and experiences (field trips).

Proposal deadline is extended 31 May 2022 (20 May 2022). Notification of acceptance or denial will be sent on or before 3 June 2022.  Confirmation of participation is due on or before 10 June 2022.
